Got Hope?

I remember hearing a conversation where a man was explaining his belief that HOPE, was a weak word, for the weak minded. A lady in his circle applauded his opinion. This opinion is quite common the world, which suggests its better to take action, than to HOPE. Some even say that hope is powerless and that it requires no action.

One example of the word HOPE as a transitive verb listed in the Merriam-Webster dictionary is; “to hope without any basis for expecting fulfillment.” Now let’s pause there for a moment. I’ll repeat, to hope “without any basis” for expecting fulfillment.

Without any basis? That’s a scary, and lonesome thought! Please allow me to share the bold truth that HOPE, is none of those things. Not one of them. For Christians, HOPE is the exact opposite of those things. There is POWER in HOPE for Christians. How do we know? Our creator made it very clear in many scriptures. God tells us exactly what HOPE is, and how we apply it. Let’s look at His word and break it down.

Take Jeremiah 29:11 for example. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

God has plans to give us Hope. Now, why would God give us HOPE, if HOPE was powerless? Why would God give us HOPE, if HOPE was baseless? Why would God give us HOPE, if HOPE was weak? There is POWER in HOPE!

Let’s look at more scripture that teaches us what HOPE truly is and does for us.

  • First of all, Romans 15:4 tells us plain and clear that “Scriptures give us HOPE” this could be enough said, but there is much more.
  • Proverbs 10:28 tells us that “the HOPE of the righteous brings joy.” Hope brings us joy. Who doesn’t want or need joy in their life? If Hope can bring it, then bring on the HOPE!
  • I love this next one! Psalm 33:18 tells us that the eye of the Lord is on those who HOPE in his steadfast love. His eye is on you, when you HOPE, in HIS love. Do you see the power in that?
  • Here’s an interesting one. Proverbs 13:12 tells us that Hope deferred makes the heart sick. This is a clear warning about what can happen to our hearts when we put off HOPE. It makes our hearts sick.

So what about the word HOPE according to God have I written so far that makes it baseless or powerless or weak? Au contraire, mon frere! I think William B. Nelson, Jr. said it perfectly when he wrote that “Hope is the proper response to the promises of God, and that Hope stimulates good works.”

Christ followers understand that we are not in control, but God. We know that many circumstances will come that render us in a position of surrender; because there is no action we can take, to change a result that is beyond our control. But in HOPE, we can stand firm on the basis of the promises of God! We can find joy and take comfort in knowing that the eye of the Lord is upon us. Our HOPE will stimulate good works that will help us, and others, to overcome. Hope gives us the power to withstand and is the proper response to the promises of God. There is POWER in HOPE for Christians.

So now, after understanding all of this, I’m am excited, encouraged and utterly enthused to HOPE more. To strengthen my HOPE in the promises of God, and expect that when things are out of my control, He will deliver.
